The 2,000-year-old recipe behind authentic Aleppo soap

Our natural Aleppo soap is crafted following a recipe that dates back over 2,000 years to the ancient city of Aleppo, Syria — widely recognized as the birthplace of bar soap. Made from just four pure ingredients: first cold-pressed olive oil, laurel berry oil, water, and plant-based lye. The soap is produced through a meticulous artisanal process — saponification, cooling, cutting, and a drying period of 9 months to a year — ensuring a bar of exceptional quality, free from artificial additives, colorants and fragrances. Equally timeless, our Savon de Marseille carries a 300-year-old French soap tradition.

Laurel oil concentrations: 4%, 20%, 30% — which is right for you?

The percentage of laurel berry oil in an Aleppo soap directly determines its strength and therapeutic properties. A 4% concentration is the gentlest, ideal for everyday face and body cleansing. At 20%, the soap becomes more purifying, suited for oily or combination skin prone to blemishes. The 30% concentration is the most potent, recommended for skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis or acne. All our bars are made by master soapmakers in Aleppo for guaranteed authenticity. Pair with our shea butter soaps for an ultra-moisturizing daily routine.

Why Aleppo soap is ideal for sensitive and reactive skin

Unlike most commercial soaps, our natural Aleppo soap contains no synthetic detergents, parabens, sulfates or artificial fragrances — ingredients that commonly trigger irritation in sensitive skin. Laurel berry oil provides natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and deeply moisturizing properties. It leaves skin soft, balanced and calm after every wash. Equally effective as a natural Marseille soap alternative for those with reactive skin.

FAQ

Aleppo soap can be used on both face and body as a daily cleanser. Simply wet the bar, lather between your hands or onto a washcloth, and apply in gentle circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. For best results, store the bar in a dry, well-ventilated soap dish between uses to extend its life. Unlike most soaps, Aleppo soap actually improves with age as the outer layer oxidizes to a rich dark brown.

Aleppo soap is free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates and colorants — the most common triggers for skin irritation. Its two key ingredients, olive oil and laurel berry oil, are both naturally anti-inflammatory and deeply moisturizing. Laurel berry oil has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for eczema, psoriasis and sensitive or reactive skin conditions.

The right concentration depends on your skin type and needs. 4% laurel oil is ideal for normal or daily use on all skin types. 20% is recommended for oily, combination or acne-prone skin that benefits from stronger purifying action. 30% is best for skin with conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, where a more therapeutic effect is desired. When in doubt, start with a lower concentration and increase gradually.

Yes — Aleppo soap is an excellent natural shampoo bar, particularly for those with sensitive scalps, dandruff or oily hair. Its laurel berry oil content helps regulate sebum production and soothe scalp irritation. Use a 4% or 20% concentration for hair. Expect a short adjustment period of 2 to 4 weeks as your scalp adapts to a sulfate-free routine.

LEARN MORE

Considered the ancestor of Marseille soap, Aleppo soap has been made for over 2,000 years in the ancient fortress city of Alep, Syria. This iconic Aleppo Syrian soap is one of the oldest known solid soaps in the world — and its traditional recipe remains virtually unchanged to this day.

Crafted from 100% natural ingredients, Aleppo soap is made using a blend of first cold-pressed olive oil, laurel berry oil, water, and plant-based soda. It contains no perfume, no dyes, and no artificial additives, making it a favorite among lovers of minimalist and natural skincare.

How is Aleppo soap made?

Aleppo soap follows a meticulous, ancestral process consisting of four key steps: saponification, cooling, cutting, and drying. After a three-day boil in large copper vats, the soap paste is poured onto waxed sheets, leveled by hand (and foot!), then cut into individual cubes. These distinctive blocks are then stacked and aged for 9 to 12 months. During this time, they harden, lose moisture, and develop their characteristic two-tone appearance — a brown crust on the outside and a green heart inside.

This traditional method results in a long-lasting, hypoallergenic bar with a dense, creamy lather that’s gentle on even the most delicate skin.

Aleppo Soap Benefits

Thanks to its natural composition, Aleppo soap offers numerous skin benefits. Its high olive oil content nourishes and hydrates, while laurel berry oil provides antiseptic and purifying properties — perfect for sensitive skin, eczema, redness, or blemish-prone skin. It can also be used as a solid shampoo, especially for irritated or dandruff-prone scalps, and even as a laundry soap due to its hypoallergenic formula.

Authentic Aleppo Syrian soaps are irregular in shape and earthy in tone — a true sign of artisan craftsmanship. At La Maison du Savon de Marseille, all our Aleppo soaps are made by master soapmakers in Aleppo, using these time-honored methods.
