Aleppo Soap – The Ancient Origin of Marseille Soap

Aleppo soap, the ancestor of Marseille soap, is a natural product with multiple skin benefits.
Originating over 2,000 years ago in the fortified city of Aleppo, Syria, it is crafted using traditional methods that have remained unchanged for centuries.

Made from just four natural ingredients olive oil, laurel berry oil, water, and plant-based lye Aleppo soap is produced through four artisanal steps: saponification, cooling, cutting, and a long drying process that lasts between 9 months and a year.
This time-honored technique ensures a soap of exceptional quality, naturally antiseptic and moisturizing, ideal for sensitive or easily irritated skin.

Our collection includes both solid and liquid Aleppo soaps, made by master soapmakers in Aleppo and enriched with laurel berry oil for its soothing and purifying properties.
The solid versions, available with 4%, 20%, or 30% laurel oil, are perfect for daily use, while the liquid Aleppo soap suits all skin types and can even be used as an anti-dandruff shampoo.

Free from artificial fragrance, Aleppo soap is deeply nourishing, hydrating, and suitable for both face and body, offering natural, long-lasting care for clean, soft, and protected skin.

LEARN MORE

Considered the ancestor of Marseille soap, Aleppo soap has been made for over 2,000 years in the ancient fortress city of Alep, Syria. This iconic Aleppo Syrian soap is one of the oldest known solid soaps in the world — and its traditional recipe remains virtually unchanged to this day.

Crafted from 100% natural ingredients, Aleppo soap is made using a blend of first cold-pressed olive oil, laurel berry oil, water, and plant-based soda. It contains no perfume, no dyes, and no artificial additives, making it a favorite among lovers of minimalist and natural skincare.

How is Aleppo soap made?

Aleppo soap follows a meticulous, ancestral process consisting of four key steps: saponification, cooling, cutting, and drying. After a three-day boil in large copper vats, the soap paste is poured onto waxed sheets, leveled by hand (and foot!), then cut into individual cubes. These distinctive blocks are then stacked and aged for 9 to 12 months. During this time, they harden, lose moisture, and develop their characteristic two-tone appearance — a brown crust on the outside and a green heart inside.

This traditional method results in a long-lasting, hypoallergenic bar with a dense, creamy lather that’s gentle on even the most delicate skin.

Aleppo Soap Benefits

Thanks to its natural composition, Aleppo soap offers numerous skin benefits. Its high olive oil content nourishes and hydrates, while laurel berry oil provides antiseptic and purifying properties — perfect for sensitive skin, eczema, redness, or blemish-prone skin. It can also be used as a solid shampoo, especially for irritated or dandruff-prone scalps, and even as a laundry soap due to its hypoallergenic formula.

Authentic Aleppo Syrian soaps are irregular in shape and earthy in tone — a true sign of artisan craftsmanship. At La Maison du Savon de Marseille, all our Aleppo soaps are made by master soapmakers in Aleppo, using these time-honored methods.
